Shogun

Will there be a Shogun Season 2?

Shogun is a historical drama miniseries based on the 1975 novel of the same name by James Clavell. The series premiered in 2024 on Hulu and FX.

Based on James Clavell’s novel, FX’s Shōgun is set in Japan in the year 1600 at the dawn of a century-defining civil war. Lord Yoshii Toranaga is fighting for his life as his enemies on the Council of Regents unite against him, when a mysterious European ship is found marooned in a nearby fishing village.

Shogun was met with rave reviews from critics and fans alike. The series sits at a near-perfect 99% on Rotten Tomatoes with an equally impressive 93% Audience Score.

The series was the most streamed program across all platforms between February 26 and March 3, 2024, and drew 9 million views across Hulu, Disney+, and Star+ in its first six days of release.

Given the incredible response, you may be wondering if there are plans for a second season of Shogun. Here’s what we know so far!

Will there be a second season of Shogun?

Shogun was billed as a “limited series,” and based on comments from series showrunners Justin Marks and Rachel Kondo, it will stay that way.

“We took the story to the end of the book and put a period at the end of that sentence. We love how the book ends; it was one of the reasons why we both knew we wanted to do it — and we ended in exactly that place,” said Marks. “I’ve been party to this in the past with shows like this, where you build a whole factory, and it only pumps out 10 cars and closes up shop. It’s a bummer.”

“[Shogun] is not like a normal TV series,” Kondo added. “If we were in a situation like this promoting it, we wouldn’t just be in the writers’ room already, we’d be on set shooting season two by now.”

Clavell has other books that could be adapted into series

While Shogun is based on one book from Clavell, he does have others that could serve as the basis for an adaptation. There are five more books spanning different regions in Asia and the Middle-East, including Hong Kong, Iran, and Japan in a different time setting.

His 1993 novel, Gai-Jin, takes place in Japan in 1862 and could form the basis of a Shogun successor. But as of right now, nothing official has been announced and there are no plans to adapt any of Clavell’s other novels.

So for now, enjoy Shogun.
